E85 Calculator - Ethanol Mix

MPT FUEL MIXING TOOL

E85 & Ethanol Mix Calculator

Calculate exactly how much E85 and pump gas to add for E30, E50, E85, or a custom ethanol blend. Account for fuel already in the tank, actual ethanol content at the pump, and common Ford fuel tank sizes.

Use the ethanol target specified for your MPT calibration. Fuel labeled E85 does not always contain exactly 85% ethanol. Test ethanol content whenever possible.

Easy numbers at the pump

Add 19.2 gallons of E85 and 16.8 gallons of pump gas.

Using those rounded amounts gives approximately E50.0.

This calculator provides a mathematical fuel blend estimate. Always follow the fuel requirements supplied with your MPT calibration.

CALCULATOR INSTRUCTIONS

How to use the E85 Calculator

Start by telling the calculator what you are trying to accomplish. The calculator will only show the information needed for that situation.

1

Choose what you're trying to do

  • Mix a fresh tank: use this when the tank is empty or nearly empty and you want to make a new E30, E50, E85, or custom mixture.
  • Add to what's in my tank: use this when fuel is already in the vehicle and you want the finished tank to reach a specific ethanol percentage.
  • Fix my current blend: use this when your current ethanol percentage is too high or too low.
  • Just give me the ratio: use this when you only want the percentage or ratio of E85 to pump gasoline.
2

Select your target ethanol blend

Choose the ethanol percentage required by your calibration.

E30 E40 E50 E60 E70 E85 Custom

If your tune specifies E50, select E50. Do not select a different ethanol percentage simply because higher ethanol is available.

3

Choose your tank size and final fuel amount

Select your fuel tank capacity from the common Ford sizes or choose Other / Enter my tank size.

  • Choose Fill the tank if you plan to fill to the selected tank capacity.
  • Choose Specific amount if you only want a certain total amount of fuel when finished.
  • If you do not know the tank size, use the Ford tank-size guide below.
4

Tell the calculator what's already in the tank

This step appears when existing fuel needs to be included.

  • Use Use fuel gauge and drag the slider to approximately match your fuel gauge.
  • Use Enter gallons if you know the amount remaining more accurately.
  • Choose whether the current fuel is Pump Gas / E10, E30, E50, E85, or Other.
  • Select Other to enter an exact current ethanol percentage such as E37.
5

Enter the fuel available at the pump

The calculator defaults to E85 for the high-ethanol fuel and E10 for pump gasoline.

  • If your tested E85 measures E72, change the E85 field from 85 to 72.
  • If you did not test the E85, leave the default at 85 and treat the result as an estimate.
  • If your gasoline has a different ethanol percentage than E10, change that value too.
6

Calculate your mix

Select Calculate My Mix. The result will show:

  • Gallons of E85 to add
  • Gallons of pump gasoline to add
  • Estimated final ethanol percentage
  • Final fuel quantity
  • Rounded pump-friendly amounts
  • The estimated blend produced by those rounded amounts
7

If the requested blend cannot be made

Sometimes there is too much fuel already in the tank, the existing ethanol percentage is too high, or the available fuels cannot reach the requested target.

The calculator will explain the issue. When possible, Fix my current blend can determine how much fuel needs to be removed and replaced.

For the best accuracy: Use the closest possible estimate of the fuel currently in the tank and test the actual ethanol content of the E85 being used.

ETHANOL FUEL FAQ

E85 & Ethanol Mix Calculator FAQ

What is E85?
E85 is gasoline blended with a high percentage of ethanol. Despite the name, fuel sold as E85 does not always contain exactly 85% ethanol.
Is E85 always 85% ethanol?
No. The actual ethanol percentage of fuel labeled E85 can vary by station, location, and season. Testing the fuel provides a more accurate calculation.
What is E30?
E30 is a fuel blend containing approximately 30% ethanol by volume. The amount of E85 and gasoline required depends on the actual ethanol percentage of each fuel.
What is E50?
E50 is a fuel blend containing approximately 50% ethanol by volume. Use the calculator above to determine the correct quantities for the fuel available and any fuel already in the tank.
How much E85 do I need to make E30?
The amount depends on total fuel volume, the ethanol content of the high-ethanol fuel, the ethanol content of the gasoline, and any fuel already in the tank. Enter those values into the calculator above.
How much E85 do I need to make E50?
There is no single amount that works for every vehicle or fill-up. Tank size, current fuel quantity, current ethanol content, and the actual ethanol percentage of the E85 all affect the answer.
Can I mix E85 with 93 octane?
E85 and pump gasoline can be blended to create intermediate ethanol concentrations such as E30 or E50. Always use the fuel and ethanol requirements specified for your calibration.
Can I mix E85 with 91 octane?
The ethanol percentage calculation works with gasoline containing any entered ethanol percentage. However, the gasoline octane requirement must still meet the requirements of your calibration.
Can I add E85 when there is already gasoline in my tank?
Yes. Choose "Add to what's in my tank," estimate the amount of fuel remaining, select the current ethanol percentage, and enter the target ethanol blend.
What if my ethanol mixture is too low?
Choose "Fix my current blend." Enter your current fuel quantity and ethanol percentage. The calculator will determine how much higher- ethanol fuel is needed to move toward the selected target.
What if my ethanol mixture is too high?
Choose "Fix my current blend." The calculator will determine how much lower-ethanol gasoline is required. If there is not enough room in the tank, the calculator can determine how much of the current mixture needs to be removed first.
How accurate does my fuel level need to be?
The closer the estimated amount in the tank is to the actual quantity, the more accurate the calculated blend will be. If you know the approximate gallons remaining, use the "Enter gallons" option.
Should I test the ethanol content of E85?
Testing is recommended when ethanol concentration matters for the calibration. If the fuel is not tested, the calculator can use the default value of 85%, but the result should be treated as an estimate.
Does E85 require a tune?
Do not assume a vehicle can safely operate on a high-ethanol blend simply because the fuel can physically be added to the tank. Follow the fuel, hardware, and calibration requirements for your specific vehicle and tune.
Why can ethanol fuel make more power?
Ethanol has properties that can be beneficial in performance applications, including high knock resistance and charge cooling. The actual power increase depends on the vehicle, fuel system, hardware, ethanol content, and calibration.
