How to Connect to WiFi and Update an SCT BDX 40490

Updating an SCT BDX 40490

A perk of the SCT BDX is its ability to complete some tasks using WiFi.

Here's a video showing how to connect to your network and update the tuner.

Phase 1: Connect the BDX to Your Vehicle

Before you can update the device or tune your vehicle, the BDX needs to read your vehicle's specific information (strategy/VIN) to know which files to download.

  1. Locate the OBDII Port: Find the diagnostic port under the driver’s side dashboard (usually within 24 inches of the steering column).

  2. Plug in the Device: Connect the SCT BDX device to the port using the provided HDMI-to-OBDII cable.

  3. Power Up: The device will power on automatically when plugged in.

  4. Key Position: Insert your key and turn it to the ON/RUN position, but do not start the engine.

    • Note for Push-to-Start: Press the start button once (or twice depending on the car) without your foot on the brake pedal.

  5. Read Vehicle Info: From the Main Menu, select Program Vehicle. The device will now read and save your vehicle's stock information.

Phase 2: Connect to Wi-Fi

Once the vehicle information is read, the device will prompt you that an update is required. You can do this wirelessly without a computer.

  1. Select "Continue": When the "Internet Required" screen appears, select Continue.

  2. Find Your Network: The device will scan for available Wi-Fi networks. Select your local network from the list using the center button.

  3. Enter Password: Use the arrow keys to navigate the keyboard and enter your Wi-Fi password.

    • Tip: This part can be tedious. Take your time to ensure the characters are correct before selecting "Done."

  4. Confirm: Once connected, the screen will confirm a successful connection.

Phase 3: Update the Device

After connecting to the internet, the BDX will automatically check for the latest firmware and tune files compatible with your specific vehicle.

  1. Start Update: The device will begin verifying files. Allow this process to run; it may take several minutes depending on your internet speed and the size of the update.

  2. Do Not Unplug:

    • Important: The screen may go dark or the device may reboot during this process. This is normal. Do not unplug the device or turn off the ignition during this time.

  3. Completion: The device is finished when it displays a message stating "Up To Date" or "Update Complete."

  4. Final Step: You can now proceed to tune the vehicle immediately or unplug the device and return to it later.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Weak Wi-Fi: If the Wi-Fi signal in your driveway/garage is weak, you can unplug the device after it has read the vehicle info (Phase 1) and plug it into a standard USB wall charger or computer inside your house to complete the Wi-Fi update (Phase 2 & 3).

"Update Failed": If the update hangs or fails, unplug the device, wait 10 seconds, and try again closer to your router.
