Picking Your Perfect MPT Tune Combo (and How to Tell Us)
So, you’ve landed on the MPT site and you’re looking at custom tunes. You’ve been through the tuning pages, there’s a ton of info, and you’re not quite sure what it all means. No worries. I’m going to walk you through the entire process, start to finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting into.
By the time we’re done here, you’ll know why we offer more than one tune, why you might actually want more than one, what options you have, and how to tell us exactly what you want. Let’s jump in.
Step 1: How Many Tunes Should You Get?
The first thing you see on the tune page is that drop-down asking how many tunes you want. And here’s where the same three questions pop up every time:
- If I buy more than 1 tune, what tunes am I getting?
- Why would I even need more than 1 tune?
- How do I tell you what tunes I want?
❓ “If I buy more than 1 tune, what tunes am I getting?”
We don’t do the “canned” tune thing. No cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all files here. Every tune we send is custom-built for your octane, your setup, and your driving style.
Think of it like booking a table at a restaurant. If you say “table for four,” the host doesn’t just drop four identical plates of meatloaf in front of you. Each person gets to order what they want. Same here — you’re just telling us how many custom tunes you want, and you get to decide exactly what each one is.
❓ “Why would I need more than 1 tune?”
Could you survive with just one tune? Sure. But odds are, one tune won’t cover all your needs.
Every MPT tune is built from three options:
- Octane
- Tune Type
- Transmission Tuning (yes or no)
Different combos shine in different situations — like towing vs. daily driving vs. “my neighbor thinks his Silverado is fast.”
Step 2: The Big Three — Octane, Tune Type, Transmission Tuning
⛽ Octane
Octane is basically the “power level” of your tune. Higher octane = more power.
We offer tunes from 87 to E85, plus a bunch of race fuels. Here’s the golden rule:
- You can run fuel with a higher octane than your tune calls for.
- You cannot run lower.
Example: A 91 tune can run on 91 or 93. Put 87 in there and you’re asking for trouble.
And yes, 93 is pricier. But if you want max power and safety, it’s worth it. You already bought the tuner and the tunes — why leave horsepower on the table?
Tip: Don’t buy a 93 tune if you can’t get 93 regularly. East coast? You’re probably good. West coast? Not so much. Also, not every ride can use E85 without some fuel system upgrades. Double check with us before asking for that.
And before anyone asks — I’m not a fan of long-term octane booster use. It can cause spark plug issues, and if you own an Ecoboost, you already know changing plugs is a pain.
💪 Tune Types
PR-X (Performance Race X-treme)
The “go big or go home” tune. Maximum horsepower and torque without special upgrades.
Daily-Tow
Your do-it-all daily driver tune that can tow. PR-X can’t be used for towing on Ecoboost trucks, so if you haul, you’ll need this one. (Not an option for Mustangs)
Adaptive Any Octane
More relaxed, more transmission-focused, and can run on different fuels if your fuel system can handle them. Not for E85 unless you’re built for it.
Perf-Econ
Fuel-saving cruise with power on demand. Light throttle stays efficient, heavy throttle wakes it up. Stock-like shifting for smooth daily driving. (Mustangs Only)
💨 Transmission Tuning
Included free with every tune and in 99.99999% of cases, you want it.
Transmission tuning makes your ride sharper, smoother, and more fun. Shifts hit just right, power delivery is spot-on, and we can tweak it however you like within 90 days.
- Want firmer shifts? Done.
- Different shift points? Easy.
- More throttle response? Say the word.
If you stick with stock trans tuning… any complaints, you’ll have to take up with Ford.
Step 3: Example Setup
Let’s say you have a 2017 Raptor 3.5L Ecoboost, access to 87, 91, and 93 octane, and you:
- Drive it daily
- Tow occasionally
- Enjoy humiliating a certain Silverado at the stoplight
Here’s what we’d recommend:
- 93 PR-X – For maximum fun and Chevy-crushing.
- 93 Daily-Tow – For pulling the boat to the lake.
- 87 Daily-Tow – For when premium isn’t an option.
Could you just run the 87 Daily-Tow? Sure. But you didn’t buy all this to leave power sitting on the bench.
Step 4: How to Tell Us What Tunes You Want
"How do I tell you what tunes I want?"
On the product page, you just pick the number of tunes and any upgrades. You’ll tell us the details later on the MPT Tune Form.
On that form, you’ll list:
- Your vehicle info
- Any mods you’ve done
- The tunes you want
- Special requests (like turning off auto start-stop)
When to send in the form:
- Already have a tuner and just bought tunes? Send it right after you order.
- Bought a tuner and tunes without Prioritized Order Upgrade? Wait until the tuner arrives.
- Bought a tuner and tunes with Prioritized Order Upgrade? Send it right after ordering.
If you send it too early, no big deal. We’ll let you know the next step.
Step 5: Getting Your Tunes
Once your form is in, an MPT calibrator builds your tunes and emails them to you. You have 90 days to request changes, so if you want something different, just ask.
🏁 Final Word
The right tunes can totally change the way your truck drives. Whether you’re after maximum performance, better towing power, or a smoother daily driver, knowing your options means you’ll get exactly what you need. Pick the right combo, and you’ll enjoy your investment every time you hit the gas.
Stay Tuned,
Duane @ MPT
