Not Sure Which Tuner to Get? Let’s Fix That.

by Duane Head

What Tuner is best for me?

If MPT had a leaderboard for the most frequently asked questions, “What tuner should I buy?” would be in the top two—and it might even be number one. With so many options out there, it’s no surprise that picking the right one can feel overwhelming.

Let’s break it down and help you find the perfect tuner for your ride.

What is a Tuner?

A tuner is a handheld performance programmer that optimizes your vehicle's engine and transmission parameters by modifying the factory settings in the ECU (Engine Control Unit). These devices allow you to load custom or preloaded tunes to increase horsepower, improve throttle response, enhance shifting, optimize fuel efficiency, and calibrate for aftermarket parts.

Also known as:
  • Programmer
  • Tuning Device
  • Flasher
  • Flash Tool
  • Tuning Module
  • Calibrator
  • Handheld

It’s basically a magic wand for your engine—plug it in, load a tune, and boom: better performance.

Modern vehicles are no longer just machines; they’re rolling supercomputers. They track everything from tire pressure to oil life, so it makes sense that they also control power output, boost levels, and more. Gone are the days of wrenching endlessly to squeeze out extra power—now, you just tell the computer what to do, and you’re off and running.

That’s what a tuner does: it removes factory restrictions and tells your vehicle how to perform at its best.

Choosing the Right Tuner

There are a ton of programmers out there, but let’s focus on the ones that work best with MPT Tunes. Every device on this list is MPT-compatible; the key is finding the one that fits your needs.

Shared Features Across Devices

  • MPT Tunes Compatibility – All the tuners below work with MPT tunes (fitment depends on the vehicle).
  • DTC Reading & Clearing – Diagnose and clear trouble codes without needing extra tools.
  • Real-Time Data Monitoring – Track key metrics like air/fuel ratios, engine temp, and more.
  • Datalogging Capabilities – Essential for modified vehicles (especially with aftermarket turbos or superchargers).
  • Doesn’t Require Constant Plug-In – Load your tune, unplug the device, and you’re good to go. Some tuners allow you to mount them for real-time gauge monitoring, but it’s optional.

Tuner Breakdown

SCT X4 7015 / 7015PG-B

  • MPT’s best-seller and SCT’s flagship tuner.
  • Compact, user-friendly, with a large display and button navigation.
  • Fastest tune-loading time of any SCT tuner.
  • 7015PG-B version is required for certain newer Fords (connects directly to the PCM for tuning, instead of just the OBDII port).

SCT Livewire TS+ 5015P

  • Best for gauge monitoring – features a full-color touchscreen with customizable layouts.
  • Smallest SCT tuner, yet loaded with features.
  • Comes with a window moun

SCT BDX 40490

  • Similar to the X4 but adds built-in Wi-Fi for easy updates and cloud tune downloads.
  • Perfect for users who aren’t computer-savvy or don’t have access to a Windows PC.
  • Great for people who want wireless convenience without sacrificing core tuning features.

HP Tuners RTD

  • Bluetooth-based tuner that connects to your smartphone or tablet.
  • Uses the TDN app (compatible with iPhone and Android) to load tunes and monitor data.
  • No built-in screen, but ultra-portable and ideal for tech-savvy users who want mobile integration.
  • Unlike SCT tuners, compatible with Mac and Windows.
  • The biggest perk? It can tune more than one vehicle at a time (purchase of additional credits required).

COBB Accessport V3 (AP3)

  • Highly customizable display with multiple gauge layouts.
  • Doesn’t have built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but excels in user interface and design.
  • Best for enthusiasts who love tweaking display settings and monitoring multiple parameters at once.

Quick Recap (TL;DR)

  • X4 – Best if you just want a simple, reliable tuner to load tunes and store away.
  • BDX – Great if you want an X4 but with Wi-Fi for easy updates.
  • Livewire TS+ – Perfect if you love gauges and a big touchscreen.
  • RTD – Ideal if your phone is your main tool and you want to tune multiple vehicles.
  • COBB AP3 – Best for those who want customizable displays and gauge layouts.

Each tuner is designed to meet different needs, but all of them will get the job done. Whether you want something simple or loaded with features, there's a perfect option for you.
