Wagner Intercooler Compared to Stock - Horsepower difference is massive: Real Data from Joseph 2013 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost

by Mike Thornhill

Stock vs Cleaned vs Wagner Intercooler: 2013 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost

Joseph B. ran three back-to-back datalogs on his 2013 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost, all on the same exact MPT tune. The only change between runs was the intercooler setup:

  • ✅ Stock intercooler
  • ✅ Stock intercooler (cleaned)
  • ✅ Wagner intercooler

This gave us a perfect A/B/C comparison showing how much cooling efficiency impacts intake air temperature (IAT2) and horsepower.

📉 Intake Air Temperature (IAT2) vs Vehicle Speed

The cooler the air entering the engine, the more power you can make and the longer you can hold it.

The chart below shows IAT2 compared to vehicle speed during a full-throttle 0–90 mph pull. The difference is night and day as the intercooler improves:

  • Stock intercooler: Highest temps throughout the pull, heat soak hits fast and stays high.
  • Cleaned stock intercooler: Slight improvement; removing oil and debris helps air transfer, but heat still builds quickly.
  • Wagner intercooler: Massive drop in temps; holds steady and recovers fast even at higher speeds.

⚡ Horsepower vs Vehicle Speed

Same tune, same conditions, the only variable here is how efficiently each setup keeps charge temps in check. Cooler air means denser oxygen and less timing pulled from heat.

  • Stock intercooler: Power falls off once temps climb.
  • Cleaned intercooler: Slightly smoother pull, but still limited by cooling capacity.
  • Wagner intercooler: Strongest, most consistent horsepower curve across the run, no signs of heat soak.

🏁 The Takeaway

All three runs used the same MPT 93 Performance Tune. Proving the intercooler alone can make a major difference in both consistency and top-end power.

For anyone pushing an EcoBoost F-150, a high-efficiency intercooler like the Wagner isn’t just a supporting mod, it’s a performance multiplier.

Less heat, more power, and better reliability. That’s a win across the board.
